Wayne Thiebaud "Tasty Treats" Mixed Media Printmaking

Students studied Wayne Thiebaud's artwork with an emphasis on his desserts. Students were introduced to linoleum carving, tools and procedures in this course before beginning. tudents carved a 5x7 linoleum block and began with simple black and white prints. Once this skill was mastered, students were able to print with multiple colors and to create a mixed media print by adding two other materials to their printed piece.

2012 Get out the Vote Non Partisan Poster Campaign

On AIGA's Website it states:Get Out the Vote, an AIGA Design for Democracy initiative, enables designers to engage in the public arena by contributing to a coordinated voter mobilization campaign. By motivating eligible citizens to register and turn out on election day, Get Out the Vote fulfills an ongoing AIGA objective of demonstrating the value of design to the public, public officials and business by providing a clear call to action for an activity that is important to everyone.

Students were taught the Semantic Analysis (see Word Doc below). They completed a small group activity to share with the class to assist in the sketching and conceptual process.

Students create an 11x17 poster (horizontal or vertical) to boost voter turnout for 18-24 year olds. The posters were hung around the school to remind senior students to register and vote in the election.

Mixed Media Growth and Decay Still Life Drawing

Students in 2D Art: Painting and Drawing learned about shading techniques, including values, hatching, cross hatching and blending. Students learned how to use vine charcoal sticks, charcoal pencils, Prismacolor colored pencils and a variety of drawing pencils. Thumbnail sketches were completed in a timed drawing session. Once this was complete, students had to choose and present reasoning of composition choice and to draw a single flower or a vase of flowers. The flowers were soaking in paint thinner and were dying over the course of the project. I wanted for students to experience a still-life with life or the lack there of. Students divided their composition into a grid of six squares. Two squares were required to be charcoal, colored pencil and pencil. Students were challenged to consider isolating color and where it was the most important and impactful visually to do so.

Tints, Hues and Shades, O My!

Students in 2D Art: Painting and Drawing began the school year with learning how to mix colors. Students studied tessellations and created a 12 piece color wheel with tints, hues and shades contained in each. The students painted the colors in the order of their hierarchy in art. Primary colors, secondary colors and last were the tertiary (intermediate) colors. Students created a value scale in each of the 12 pieces allowing them to practice painting technique, appropriate color mixing and placement.
